A guided reading through Stephan Crane's "The Open Boat." It will lead students to see how the three topics man vs. nature, male bonding, and survival of the fittest work together to create Crane's theme: "Nature is flatly indifferent to humanity's struggle for survival." Aligned to Common Core State Standard: RL.11-12.9

I will be able to implement "What Theme Is...and Is Not" with my seniors. Topics are exactly what they provided when they were asked for a theme for a short story we read and this will be great for reassessment.
