Graphing Polygons and Finding Side Lengths

About This Lesson

During this lesson, students will review the characteristics and definitions of polygons, other key vocabulary related to polygons and coordinate planes, and how to graph coordinates (if needed). Then students will participate in a brief guided practice of graphing points to form polygons. In the main activity, "Polygon Initials," students will draw their initials using only horizontal and vertical lines on a coordinate plane. Lesson Objective: Students will be able to graph polygons on a coordinate plane and calculate the side lengths. Aligned with Common Core Standard: 6.G.3

Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
