A Place in the Middle

About This Lesson

A PLACE IN THE MIDDLE is the true story of an eleven year old Hawaiian girl who dreams of leading the hula troupe at her inner-city Honolulu school. This award-winning short film, together with the classroom discussion guide and online resources, provide an opportunity for students to think and talk about the values of diversity and inclusion, the power of knowing your heritage, and how to create a school climate of aloha – from their own point of view!

I love the video and I feel it should be shared in school for students to realize bullying is not acceptable. The video was down to earth honest and I feel that it is what students and adults need to embrace today. Love, respect, and understanding for individuals that are different in some way but yet the same in many ways. Embrace who you are and be proud of who you are!

I have not taught the lesson yet, but I am excited to use the lesson in my 8th grade ESL/ELAR classrooms. After visiting the Big Island the last five years to assist me in making my decision to retire on the Island, I have learned so much about the Islands, their history, their culture and present day routines, and the many unique problems of the Hawaiians. This will be a great lesson to share my learning with my students. Thank you so much for the time and energy you have all put into sharing this lesson!
