About This Lesson

In this lesson, students will gain an understanding of how Mandela’s humble beginnings in rural South Africa shaped his life. Students will explore a multimedia presentation about Mandela’s early life and read a passage from the unpublished manuscript of "Long Walk to Freedom" and will write an essay reflecting on a time in their own lives when they experienced a new responsibility or life-lesson. Aligned to Common Core State Standards: RH.9-10.2, RH.11-12.2, RI.9-10.1, RI.9-10.7, W.9-10.2, W.9-10.3, W.9-10.4, W.11-12.2, W.11-12.3, W.11-12.4
